Agricultural Cooperative Winery & Distillery

Since 1961, with 500 vine-growers

The Agricultural Cooperative Winery & Distillery was founded in 1961 by the vine-growers of the Tyrnavos region, with the purpose of utilizing the area’s rich grape-growing potential through the production and bottling of wine.

The Cooperative has 500 members from across the wider Tyrnavos area, cultivating a total of 900 hectares of vineyards — more than half of the region’s wine-producing acreage.

The varieties received are primarily Moschato Tyrnavou, as well as native Greek varieties such as Roditis, Assyrtiko, Bantiki, Malagousia, Limniona and Xinomavro, alongside international varieties such as Ugni Blanc, Macabeo, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Syrah and Merlot.

10,000 tons of grapes every year

Moschato Tyrnavou grape variety

The Cooperative receives around 10,000 tons of grapes each year from its members and produces wines, spirits and concentrated must. The varieties delivered are primarily Moschato Tyrnavou, along with other indigenous Greek varieties.
Muscat is deeply intertwined with the cultural identity of Tyrnavos. For this reason, the variety carries the synonym “Moschato Tyrnavou,” creating a rare global case where a region becomes identified with a specific grape variety—something that gives tremendous strength and character to the entire area.

The grape variety “Moschato Ambourgou” (Hamburg Muscat) has prevailed in the vineyards of the Tyrnavos region since 1930–36, when its planting was promoted by the Agricultural School of Larissa. Since then, it has become synonymous with Tyrnavos, as almost all of its cultivation in Greece is found in this region. In 2007, Moschato Ambourgou was officially recognized exclusively as a wine grape variety in the Prefecture of Larissa, and in 2008 it was approved for the production of “Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) Tyrnavos” wines. Recently, following a request and documentation submitted by the Agricultural Cooperative Winery & Distillery of Tyrnavos, a Ministerial Decision (886/15441, 6/2/2013) on the Classification of Vine Varieties established the term “Moschato Tyrnavou” as a synonym for “Moschato Ambourgou”, exclusively for vineyards cultivated within the current expanded Municipality of Tyrnavos.

Quality production through the ISO system

Modern production and bottling techniques

All products of the Agricultural Cooperative Winery & Distillery of Tyrnavos are produced using modern production and bottling techniques. Their quality is ensured through an integrated management system applied in the vineyards via the ISO framework, as well as through continuous oenological controls at every stage of production in the Cooperative’s fully equipped laboratory.
Recently, the Cooperative completed an investment project of €2.1 million and is proceeding with a new €5 million investment, which includes building expansions, tanks, mechanical equipment and an expansion of the photovoltaic installation.

Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) Products

Production of quality wines and spirits

From the varieties cultivated in the region — and especially from Moschato Tyrnavou — the Cooperative produces Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) wines, including white, rosé and red wines, varietal wines, and Retsina, available in various bottle sizes as well as Bag-in-Box formats.
One of the most important segments of our production is the crafting of spirits. We produce monovarietal Tsipouro of Tyrnavos exclusively from Moschato Tyrnavou, in both traditional and innovative expressions, designed to meet different preferences and drinking habits. These include Tsipouro Anised Flavored, without Anise, infused with saffron (krokos), Mastic Flavored, as well as aged tsipouro matured in oak barrels for five years—our OLD SPIRIT.

Awards for Exceptional Quality

Awards & Distinctions

With decades of experience and expertise in distillation — as well as the unique Moschato Tyrnavou grape variety — the Cooperative has earned numerous international recognitions and awards for the outstanding quality of its wines and spirits, in prestigious competitions in Greece and abroad. Many of the wines we produce have been awarded, including Moschato Tyrnavou Blanc de Noir & Roze, Rodinos, and the distinctive saffron-infused Tsipouro Stigma (International Gold Medal 2015), as well as our five-year Oak-aged Tsipouro, OLD SPIRIT (International Gold Medal 2017). With a recent distinction for our Ouzo (“Best Ouzo of the Competition” at the 24th Thessaloniki Wine & Spirits Trophy 2024), the Cooperative continues to receive significant accolades. Above all, we have achieved a widely recognized and high-quality Tsipouro — honored many times with awards and distinctions — yet the greatest reward remains the trust and appreciation of consumers over the decades.

A living monument of culture

The history behind the winery

For centuries, the production of wine and spirits in the region of Tyrnavos has been at the heart of the area’s economic, social and cultural life. The wine, tsipouro and ouzo produced here stand as a living monument of local heritage. A significant part of this long history in more recent years is the Agricultural Cooperative Winery & Distillery of Tyrnavos, which, since its establishment in 1961, has highlighted and advanced both the production and the deep-rooted tradition of the Tyrnavos vineyard and its products.
