Distillery

The Agricultural Cooperative Winery & Distillery of Tyrnavos was the first Cooperative to produce and bottle tsipouro, in an effort to highlight this unique distillate, better serve the interests of the region’s vine-growers, and promote the Tyrnavos area more broadly.

The Distillery–Beverage Unit is equipped with modern batch distillers featuring re-distillation columns, a pot still for beverage production, vinificators, stainless-steel storage tanks, a dedicated area for Aging Tsipouro in oak barrels, and complete bottling lines.

At the heart of the Cooperative’s distillery beats the production of the single-varietal Tsipouro of Tyrnavos, made exclusively from Moschato Tyrnavou.

Tsipouro of Tyrnavos is a distillate of recognized Geographical Origin, included among the spirits entitled to use Geographical Indications as defined since 1989 under Regulation (EEC) 1576/89 and retained in the newer European regulations. Recently, this recognition has also been granted international validity.
This distinction is widely regarded as highly significant, given that such recognition is exceptionally difficult to obtain—it requires a specific set of product characteristics—but once achieved, it greatly enhances the product’s value, along with that of its region of origin.

It is worth noting that Tyrnavos is the only town in Greece to receive such recognition; the other three tsipouro GIs listed in the European Regulation refer to broad geographical regions of the country, not specific towns.
